Ambassador Edvin Skrt presented his Letters of Credence to the President of Iceland
Reykjavik, February 27, 2019 - Ambassador Edvin Skrt called on the President of Iceland, Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannessons, and presented him his Letters of Credence, by which he was appointed by the President of Slovenia Borut Pahor as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Slovenia to Iceland.
Ambassador Edvin Skrt conveyed the greetings to the Icelandic President by the Slovenian President and reiterated his invitation for a visit to Slovenia.
During the talks, the Ambassador and the Icelandic President stressed the common interests and similar positions of the two small countries that are committed to multilateralism. They recalled events from the time of democratic changes in Europe almost 30 years ago, which the Icelandic president well knows also as a historian and a good connoisseur of these processes. The Ambassador emphasized the gratitude of Slovenia for the early Icelandic recognition of Slovenia’s Independence at the end of 1991. In the conversation, they touched also on the current global security, economic and democratic challenges that Europe and the global world are facing, as well as the challenges posed by increased tourist demand. At the request of the President, the Ambassador presented the Slovenian view of the situation in the countries of South-Eastern Europe.
After the handover of the credentials in Reykjavik, Ambassador Skrt hosted a Vin d’Honneur for the representatives of the Icelandic Foreign Ministry and the Reykjavik Diplomatic Corps. In his address he spoke about Slovenian-Icelandic relations and areas of interest for strengthening cooperation. He also presented the Green Group initiative in which, Slovenia and Iceland (alongside with Costa Rica, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and Cape Verde), are working to strengthen awareness of climate change, sustainable water management (and other resources) and the circular economy .
By presenting the credentials to the Icelandic President Ambassador Edvin Skrt is now accredited to all countries of the Nordic region. In addition to Iceland, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia, which is based in Copenhagen, covers also Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
